The cost of hiring a good Engineer — $ 25000!

Yup, we live in a world where there’s thousands of jobs but no one to fill it. It’s like how everyone wants to buy a limited supply crypto currency but no one is willing to sell it! — every one is eager and thirsty to hire good developers

Of course, this plays well for some professionals and companies such as recruiters and job boards. The current average cost of hiring a good senior developer in Australia is around 25,000 AUD. Assuming a good engineer is at a salary of $120,000 with a 17.5% recruitment fee. This doesn’t include the hiring time as well as the time taken to conduct interviews.

So in fairness, adding all the small increments together we’re looking at an approximate of ~$30,000 to hire good senior developers. Now I can say that this price is actually worth it, if you’re a large firm with a decent bank balance, however 88% of Australian businesses are Small to Medium size.

So what are the possible solutions ?

  • Build your personal brand on linkedin and reach out to developers and interact with them
  • Make sure your product is well marketed so that people can view as well as relate to the product, that way you filter out engineers who aren’t passionate about what you have to offer
  • Offer equity, this will drive down the the offering salary making it more affordable for you to bring someone on board
  • Repeat the first point, build your personal brand. Share articles about how your company manages code, talk about the code culture in your firm, and in general emphasise on your company culture

One cannot imagine how many good devs works at poorly managed companies, due to whatever reason. All you have to do is make your home welcoming enough and trust me you’ll get them onboard.

I’ve hired 8 senior developers for $0, because they often reach out to me on LinkedIn due to the content I share. They align with my management principles and associate their growth patterns with mine. (Being a developer myself helps ofcourse)

If all this is too hard, well you don’t need to worry. We’re currently building a ridiculously simple hiring solution where you don’t need to be technical or break your bank. Hire a developer in 2 clicks, whilst knowing everything relevant about them.

We’re calling ourselves dveloper, and i’ll be sharing a lot of information as well as my experiences and other tech leaders in Australias software scene from hiring developers.
